Jumaane Williams Receives Political Donations From Straw Donor Involved in Mayor Adams Indictment
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Recent reports revealed that Jumaane Williams, New York City’s Public Advocate and next in line for mayor if Eric Adams resigns, received political donations from a businessman involved in the recent federal indictment of Adams.

The businessman, Brooklyn-based construction contractor Tolib Mansurov, is accused of arranging illegal straw donations for Mayor Adams. Mansurov is also considered to be a “key figure” amongst the Uzbek community in New York, working as executive director of the nonprofit Silk Road Foundation, which reportedly provides services to Central Asians living in New York. In exchange for the campaign donations, Adams allegedly completed favors for Mansurov, including removing red tape around a luxury condo that had a stop-work order placed.

Williams’s re-election campaign accepted $5,000 in donations from Mansurov and two employees of his company earlier this year. The issue raised concerns as the donations came amid allegations that Mansurov was involved in an illegal campaign finance scheme designed to funnel money to political candidates through straw donors, a practice used to bypass the city’s contribution limits.

Although Mayor Adams faces bribery, fraud, and solicitation charges related to these illegal donations, Williams has not indicated that he will return the funds. This silence has led to questions about the integrity of his campaign finance practices and his stance on the matter.

Prosecutors are closely examining Mansurov’s donations to several political figures, including Williams, as part of a broader investigation into corruption in New York City’s political landscape. The case highlights the pervasive issues of illicit financial contributions that take advantage of the city’s matching funds program and the legal implications for those who may unknowingly or knowingly benefit from them.

While Williams has not been charged in connection with the allegations, his acceptance of the funds places him in a difficult position as he prepares to possibly succeed Adams as mayor. The investigation continues, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over Williams’s future political prospects.

A spokesperson for Public Advocate Williams, when asked about the donations and relationship with Mansurov, said, “We were unaware of his donations to the mayor and have no specific reason to believe the contribution to the public advocate was improper, but the campaign will closely review the donation to ensure both ethical and legal compliance.”
