Governor Kathy Hochul announced New York’s groundbreaking Appliance Upgrade Program on Thursday, November 21st, aimed at offering retail rebates for energy-efficient appliances. The initiative, designed to benefit low and moderate-income residents, allows eligible households to purchase ENERGY STAR® certified heat pump dryers with rebates funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This program is part of New York’s broader commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the program provides incentives of up to $840 for appliance purchases and installations. Additional funds cover essential electrical upgrades, with a potential combined total of $14,000 in incentives for eligible households. “New York is leveraging federal funds to enable families to save energy and reduce emissions,” said Hochul during the announcement at Samsung 837, a green tech showroom in New York City.

The program’s emphasis is on replacing outdated and fossil fuel-powered dryers with modern, energy-efficient alternatives. Customers earning up to 150% of the area median income can apply for these rebates on a first-come, first-served basis. Participating contractors can also earn installation incentives, enhancing accessibility for disadvantaged communities. “This is an impactful way for New Yorkers to contribute to healthier homes and communities,” said NYSERDA CEO Doreen Harris.

The IRA funding allocates $317.4 million to New York, split between home efficiency and electrification rebates. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the initiative, highlighting the dual benefits of financial savings and environmental impact. Congressman Dan Goldman emphasized the importance of renewable energy transitions in combating the climate crisis.

The program’s launch includes the MyEnergy portal, a digital platform designed to connect residents with resources, rebates, and expert assistance. This comprehensive tool ensures streamlined access to the program’s benefits and supports New York’s climate goals. “This initiative raises the bar for energy policies nationwide,” Goldman added, urging other states to adopt similar strategies.

As New York continues to expand its Appliance Upgrade Program into 2025, this initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to clean energy and equitable economic growth. Governor Hochul’s efforts reinforce New York’s leadership in sustainable practices and energy efficiency on a national scale.
