DSA Outlines Policy Agenda as Mamdani Prepares to Lead New York City
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is entering office with strong backing from the organization that helped propel his campaign. As Mamdani prepares to take office, members of the DSA’s Anti-War Working Group (AWWG) have outlined a series of policy proposals they hope his administration will consider.

The group’s internal planning documents detail a broad set of demands centered on divestment and social justice. Among them are calls to withdraw city pension funds from Israeli bonds, terminate municipal contracts with firms linked to Israel, and prohibit Israeli products from city-run grocery stores. The draft also proposes removing nonprofit status from organizations that fund the Israeli Defense Forces, investigating real estate transactions connected to settlements in the West Bank, and ending NYPD training programs involving the Israeli military.

Meeting notes from the AWWG show a structured plan for advancing these policies, assigning members to research each proposal and coordinate outreach with local officials. The documents emphasize collaboration within DSA working groups and strategic communication to maintain public support while focusing on actionable reforms over symbolic gestures.

Mamdani’s upcoming term is expected to test how far the city’s first openly socialist mayor-elect can align grassroots priorities with the practical demands of governing the nation’s largest metropolis.
