Trump Lavishes Praise on Mayor-Elect Mamdani in Surprisingly Cordial White House Meeting

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani delivered an unexpectedly warm display during their Oval Office meeting, transforming what had been billed as a political showdown into a cordial exchange that surprised observers across the political spectrum. The meeting, anticipated to be tense because of the pair’s combative rhetoric during the campaign, instead unfolded as a public show of mutual praise and shared priorities.

Trump repeatedly expressed confidence in Mamdani’s incoming administration. He remarked that the democratic socialist “has a chance to really do something great for New York” and even suggested he would be “cheering for him” if he succeeds. At one point, Trump brushed aside a question about Rep. Elise Stefanik’s claim that Mamdani was a “jihadist,” responding, “No, I don’t,” and describing the mayor-elect as “a very rational person.”

Reporters pressed Mamdani about his past criticisms of Trump, including having called him a “fascist” and a “despot.” Before Mamdani could answer, Trump lightly tapped his arm and interjected, “That’s OK, you can just say yes. It’s easier than explaining,” prompting laughter in the room. Trump also noted he had “been called much worse than a despot,” downplaying the tension.

Mamdani repeatedly redirected questions toward his focus on affordability, the core issue of his campaign. He explained that New Yorkers across the political spectrum were concerned about housing costs, utility rates, groceries, and wages. He stressed that he intended to work with the administration “where we agree” to address the city’s cost-of-living crisis. Both men highlighted shared views on expanding housing and managing utility costs, with Trump commenting that he wanted to see “the same thing” on housing development to bring rents down.

The meeting also touched on crime and immigration enforcement. Mamdani mentioned concerns raised by residents regarding federal operations in the city, while Trump emphasized their mutual interest in maintaining public safety. He remarked that he would feel “very, very comfortable” living in New York under Mamdani’s leadership.

During the press availability, Mamdani criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza, asserting that they amounted to genocide and stating that U.S. taxpayer funds should not support such operations, consistent with his previous comments.

The unexpectedly affable exchange complicates Republican efforts to cast Mamdani as a radical figure ahead of the 2026 midterms. Trump’s open embrace of the incoming mayor, paired with the noticeably relaxed dynamic between the two, reshaped expectations for their future relationship as Mamdani prepares to take office on January 1.
