Burkina Faso’s Military Junta Dissolves Government

Burkina Faso’s military junta appointed a new prime minister on Saturday following its dissolution of the national government.

According to reports by the Associated Press, Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela was ousted along with his government and replaced by the country’s communications minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo.

Though no official reason was provided, this sudden change in leadership is nothing new for Burkina Faso. The military junta currently in control of the government seized power in 2022 by ousting Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba less than a year after he had deposed then-President Roch Marc Kaboré.

The junta’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré, orchestrated a coup against Damiba in September of 2022, claiming that his government had failed to stem the spread of violence caused by insurgent groups linked to  al-Qaeda and ISIS. Though Traoré initially promised to end military rule in “two to three months,” the official deadline has been extended to 2029 following national discussions in May of this year.

Recent developments in Burkina Faso reflect a wider trend in the Sahel region, where neighboring countries Niger and Mali have also experienced military coups. In Niger, President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in July 2023 by a military junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, who also cited security failures as a primary justification. Mali has similarly experienced two military coups since 2020 in the face of mounting insurgent violence.

This series of events has also propelled Ibrahim Traoré to the global stage, who has become the world’s youngest president at just 34 years old. Traoré’s rise highlights a generational shift in African leadership, where younger figures are taking charge and asserting their visions for the future. While his rule remains controversial, it underscores the broader narrative of African nations positioning themselves as key players in a rapidly changing global order. As these countries navigate their complex realities, they are emerging as critical geopolitical actors with growing influence on the world stage.
