Lt. Gov. Delgado Launches Campaign Against Governor Hochul Amid Political Rift
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a rare and contentious intraparty battle, New York Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado formally announced his bid to compete against Governor Kathy Hochul in the Democratic primary the following year on Monday, June 2nd. This represents a significant shift from the two leaders’ prior alliance following months of political conflict between them.

Delgado, whom Hochul named lieutenant governor in 2022, described the governor’s leadership as lacking “bold, decisive, transformational leadership. ” He contrasts himself with “the powerful and well-connected” who, as he put it, have their champions. Delgado urged for a governor with a clear vision to address problems like inexpensive housing, childcare, and healthcare, but he did not name Hochul specifically.

Over the past year, the relationship between Delgado and Hochul has deteriorated significantly. Delgado was stripped of important responsibilities, including office space and staff, after openly breaking ranks on several occasions, including calling for New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ resignation and declining to support Hochul’s reelection bid.

Following her split with Delgado, Hochul pushed through a reform making the 2026 gubernatorial primary the first in New York history where governor and lieutenant governor candidates run on a joint ticket.
