On Tuesday, December 31st, Mayor Eric Adams launched the “Founded By NYC” campaign, a year-long initiative marking New York City’s 400th anniversary. The campaign will feature concerts, free events, and cultural activities throughout 2025. It aims to celebrate the city’s achievements and resilience while recognizing the significant contributions of Indigenous communities, particularly the Lenape people.

“For four centuries, history has happened here,” said Mayor Adams during the launch. “And in 2025, through our ‘Founded By NYC’ campaign, we will celebrate all those who came here from around the world over those 400 years to build our great city — the New Yorkers whose vibrant culture, innovation, and abilities continue to make us the envy of the world today.”

Partnering with NYC Tourism + Conventions, the campaign will bring together organizations such as the Lenape Center, The Broadway League, Times Square Alliance, the Museum of the City of New York, multiple Business Improvement Districts, and all city agencies. Events will span all five boroughs, incorporating historical significance, cultural impact, and innovation themes. Highlights include art installations at Gracie Mansion, free summer movies in city parks, Broadway performances, and the largest-ever NYC Summer Streets event covering 400 blocks.

CEO of NYC Tourism + Conventions, Julie Coker, noted, “Our year-long commemoration invites visitors and locals alike to explore the rich history, cultural diversity, and innovation that define New York City.”

A focal point of the campaign is the partnership with the Lenape Center, continuing Mayor Adams’ commitment to honoring Indigenous heritage. Joe Baker, co-founder of the Lenape Center, emphasized the importance of teaching New Yorkers about the Lenape’s harmonious relationship with nature, stating, “This anniversary provides an opportunity to teach New Yorkers about crucial principles of culture that have provided the Lenape a harmonious and balanced existence with Haki, Mother Earth.”

In 2024, New York City welcomed nearly 65 million visitors, generating $79 billion in economic impact and supporting over 388,000 leisure and hospitality jobs. Officials predict 2025 will surpass these records, solidifying NYC’s position as a top global destination.

The “Founded By NYC” campaign highlights the city’s lasting spirit and rich cultural heritage, encouraging people worldwide to join in celebrating its remarkable history and bright future.
